Global Trade Update – October 2025: Global Trade Remains Resilient Despite Policy Shifts and Uncertainty

According to UNCTAD’s Global Trade Update (October 2025), global trade continues to show remarkable resilience in the face of policy uncertainty, geopolitical tensions, and shifting industrial strategies. The report reveals that global trade expanded by over US$500 billion in the first half of 2025, with strong momentum continuing into the third quarter (Q3). This sustained growth was driven primarily by developing economies, particularly through South–South trade, while the United States’ weak import performance weighed on the global average.

Key Highlights

  • Strong Overall Performance:
Global trade in goods and services rose by about 2.5% quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) in Q2 2025, with services rebounding after earlier contraction. UNCTAD’s nowcast projects continued growth through Q3 2025, around 2.5% for goods and 4% for services.
  • Developing Economies in the Lead:
Developing countries drove much of the expansion, with imports growing by 6% and exports by 3% in Q2 2025. South–South trade performed above average, solidifying its role as a key growth engine, especially across East Asia and Africa, where intra-regional trade remained robust.
  • Sectoral Trends:
Manufacturing remains the strongest sector, led by electronics, non-electrical machinery, and transport equipment, while the iron and steel trade slowed. Agricultural trade rose due to high coffee prices, but natural resource exports, particularly fossil fuels, declined as prices fell. The automotive sector was buoyed by hybrid and electric vehicles, signaling a green transition.
  • Regional Patterns:
East Asia and Africa saw the fastest trade growth, contrasting with contractions in North America, where new US tariffs and domestic demand shifts curbed imports.
  • Trade Policy and Geopolitics:
Despite new trade barriers and uncertainty surrounding US policy, the overall impact on global trade has remained limited. The report credits the resilience of the multilateral trading system, the strengthening of South–South cooperation, and continued services trade growth for cushioning global trade from deeper disruption.
  • Emerging Trade Dynamics:
Trends such as friendshoring and nearshoring, realigning supply chains among politically aligned or geographically close countries, have stabilized. However, UNCTAD notes that geoeconomic fragmentation continues to shape trade dependence between major economies.

Outlook

UNCTAD forecasts that global trade will reach record highs by the end of 2025, driven by developing economies, resilient manufacturing sectors, and stable multilateral cooperation. Nonetheless, risks persist, particularly from unresolved trade policy uncertainties, geopolitical tensions, and the uneven recovery of key sectors such as energy and natural resources.

In an increasingly complex trade landscape, the report underscores the importance of diversification, regional integration, and sustainable trade practices to strengthen global supply chains and ensure inclusive growth.
