Unlocking Apapa: AITCR’s Study Reveals Key to Port Efficiency and Economic Growth!

Is the infamous Apapa gridlock still a headache for your business? At Africa International Trade and Commerce Research (AITCR), in partnership with the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry. AITCR is committed to finding solutions that drive Nigeria’s economic progress.
That is why AITCR conducted a comprehensive “Baseline Study on the Apapa Seaport e-Call Up System Operation 2021.” Our findings, drawn directly from key stakeholders, offer a clear path forward: the electronic call-up system holds immense potential to slash gridlock and congestion if managed with transparency and proper oversight.
What Did AITCR Discover?
The study delved deep into the experiences of port users, revealing critical insights:
- Exporters and Importers Lead the Way: A significant 70% of our respondents were exporters and importers, highlighting their central role in port operations.
- Apapa Remains Preferred: Despite challenges, Apapa Port is the top choice for importers and exporters, largely due to perceived cost-effectiveness compared to other national ports.
- Two-Way Trade on the Rise: A promising over 47% of exporters and importers engage in both import and export activities, signalling a robust future for Nigeria’s integration into regional and global value chains.
- Key Cargo Flows: Primary agricultural products dominate non-oil exports (42%), while general cargoes make up the bulk of imports (32%).
- Crucial Service Providers: 71% of service providers at the port are clearing and forwarding agents, underscoring their vital role in trade facilitation.
The Real Cost of Delays: It is More Than Just Traffic
Port delays are not just an inconvenience; they have a tangible, detrimental impact on lives and livelihoods:
- Job Losses: Every prolonged delay in exporting goods can lead to job losses, as businesses struggle to meet payroll and contractual obligations.
- Reduced Productivity: For importers, delays in receiving crucial machinery or raw materials cripple production capacity, leading to supply shortages.
- Inflationary Pressure: When demand outstrips supply due to port bottlenecks, prices for everyday consumables and final products rise, disproportionately affecting vulnerable families.
As stakeholders expressed their optimism for the e-Call Up system, it is clear that unlocking Apapa’s efficiency is paramount to fostering economic stability and growth.
AITCR Recommendation: Transparency is Key!
The e-Call Up System is a viable solution to a persistent problem. However, its success hinges on the institution of proper and transparent management structures. This ensures fairness, reduces corruption, and builds confidence among all port users.
