The Liberian government took an important step to utilize intellectual property (IP) as a catalyst for national growth by hosting a National Intellectual Property Conference on April 23, 2025. This event reaffirmed the government’s commitment to integrating IP into the country’s development strategy. The conference was themed “The Role of Intellectual Property and the Creative Sector in Achieving the ARREST Agenda Under Program Seven.” It highlighted the crucial importance of innovation, patents, trademarks, and copyrights in driving economic prosperity and promoting technological advancement.

The Office of the President is taking the lead in an initiative to enhance discussions on the role of intellectual property (IP) in Liberia’s socioeconomic landscape. Atty. Cornelia Kruah, the Deputy Minister for Administration at the Ministry of State for Presidential Affairs, announced that the President plans to host a National Intellectual Property Summit. This summit aims to bring together policymakers, experts, and industry stakeholders to explore how intellectual property can contribute to Liberia’s strategic goals. It is expected to facilitate insightful discussions on policy implementation, industry adaptation, and the enforcement of intellectual property rights.

Additionally, Mr. Kruah indicated that the President intends to commission a comprehensive study to evaluate the impact of IP across various sectors in Liberia. This study is anticipated to assess the current IP ecosystem, identify key areas for improvement, and propose strategic pathways for fostering innovation, protecting local creatives, and attracting investment.

Garmai Koboi, the Director General of the Liberia Intellectual Property Office (LIPO), described the conference as a pivotal moment in the country’s development journey.

Intellectual property plays a crucial role in driving innovation, encouraging entrepreneurship, and protecting creative works. Strengthening IP laws and enforcement mechanisms in Liberia will provide a foundation for economic growth by ensuring that inventors, artists, and businesses receive fair recognition and protection for their contributions. The national decision to prioritise intellectual property at the national level positions Liberia to set the stage for a future where knowledge-based industries, creative enterprises, and technological innovation can thrive, ultimately leading the country toward sustainable development.
